Why has the Hungarian raspberry become a luxury product?
Recently, the price of Hungarian raspberries has increased to an incredible extent in domestic markets. Many were surprised when they saw the fruit's new price in stores and at vendors. This previously popular fruit, accessible to everyone, has now become almost a luxury item in Hungary.
According to the latest data, the price per kilogram of Hungarian raspberries can reach as high as 21,000 forints. This amount is prohibitively high for most consumers. Although raspberries are a seasonal product, such extreme prices have rarely been experienced in Hungarian commerce before.
Despite the high consumer price, the situation for producers is not easy at all. According to reports, Hungarian farmers are liquidating their plantations en masse. The reason for this is that production costs have increased drastically, while labor shortages and uncertain crop yields also complicate the work.
Climate change also poses a serious challenge to this sector of agriculture. The raspberry is a very sensitive plant that struggles to withstand the extreme heat and prolonged droughts that are becoming increasingly frequent in Hungary. Many farmers can no longer afford the additional costs of irrigation and protection.
According to experts, if this process does not change, Hungarian raspberries could completely disappear from the market. In the future, we will likely encounter more and more imported fruit in stores, while domestically grown raspberries will only be accessible to a very narrow segment of the population.
