New water retention systems are being planned in Hungary to combat drought
Large-scale developments in water management are beginning in Hungary. Following a government decision, the planning of new water retention systems can commence from the Szigetköz region all the way to the Nyírség. The goal of the project is to more effectively store water that falls during wetter periods in various parts of the country.
The droughts experienced in recent years have posed serious challenges to Hungarian agriculture and natural habitats. According to experts, the situation is particularly critical in the Homokhátság region, where the groundwater level has dropped significantly. The new plans could help improve the region's water catchment capacity and allow the soil to retain moisture for longer periods.
One of the priority locations for these developments will be the area around Tiszaalpár. Technical solutions will be implemented there to allow water to be retained within the landscape, thereby supporting the local ecosystem and farmers. During the development of the plans, engineers will take into account the geographical characteristics of the given region and the state of the water network.
This program could offer a long-term solution for managing water shortages caused by climate change. According to experts, the construction of water retention systems is essential to ensure that agricultural production remains sustainable in the future and that the natural state of the Hungarian landscape can be preserved.
