Complaint filed over lack of transparency in Hungarian defense deals
Transparency International (TI) Hungary has filed a formal complaint with the European Commission regarding Hungarian defense industry tenders. According to the organization, the government's military deals worth billions are not transparent enough, which raises serious concerns. The aim of the complaint is for European authorities to investigate the procurement processes in Hungary.
According to TI Hungary, rules regarding public disclosure are often not followed during defense developments. The organization believes that many deals are concluded in secret, without public competition, making it impossible to know exactly on what basis partners are selected. In their view, this practice increases the risk of corruption and undermines market competition.
In recent years, Hungary has spent significant amounts on modernizing its army. New factories have been built, and modern combat vehicles have been purchased from foreign, mainly German, companies. However, according to TI, these processes do not meet European Union expectations, which mandate the clean and verifiable use of taxpayers' money.
The European Commission must now examine the complaint received. If the Commission decides that Hungarian regulations violate EU law, it may initiate proceedings against the country. The case highlights that finding a balance between national security interests and economic transparency remains a serious professional and political challenge in Hungary.
