European Bathing Water Report: What is the state of Hungary's waters?

The European Environment Agency has published its latest 2025 report, which examined the cleanliness of European bathing waters. Every year, experts check the quality of natural waters to ensure they are safe for beachgoers.

According to the research, the majority of European bathing sites are in excellent condition. This year, Cyprus, Greece, and Bulgaria top the list, where seawater was measured to be the cleanest. In these countries, almost all beaches meet the strictest health standards without exception.

Based on the survey, Hungary has unfortunately fallen behind the leaders. Although the quality of domestic natural bathing waters is generally adequate, the report suggests that, compared to the European average, more development and increased monitoring are needed to improve water quality.

Experts emphasize that the cleanliness of the water depends not only on environmental measures but also on the responsible behavior of local communities and visitors. The goal is for the classification of bathing sites in Hungary to improve in the coming years.

Before the summer season, it is worth checking the water quality of designated beaches. Authorities advise bathers to seek refreshment only at officially monitored locations for their own safety.
