Low water levels on the Danube: challenges in river transport
In recent weeks, the water level of the Danube in Hungary has dropped significantly due to prolonged dry and rainless weather. The river's water level has reached a critical point in several sections, which is already hindering navigation and waterborne freight transport.
The drop in water level is particularly problematic for cargo ships, as they cannot reach ports with full loads in the shallower riverbed. Consequently, shipping companies must transport less cargo at a time, which slows down logistics processes and increases transport costs.
According to experts, this phenomenon is not unusual during the summer and early autumn period, but this year's low water level began earlier than usual. Authorities are continuously measuring water depth and, if necessary, introducing restrictions to ensure safe navigation.
The development of the Danube's water level affects not only the economy but also the environment. In shallower water, the habitat of aquatic life changes, and the operation of water utilities also requires increased attention during this period.
According to meteorological forecasts, expected precipitation in the near future may help the water level rise slowly. Experts continue to monitor the situation and ask those involved in water transport to exercise increased caution when navigating the river.
