Negative award for the minister due to his deportation of refugees

The Interior Minister of Bremen, politician Ulrich Mäurer from the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has been awarded the title "Abschiebeminister 2025" (Minister of Deportation 2025), a negative title given annually by the initiative "Jugendliche ohne Grenzen" (Youth Without Borders) to the official considered the most stringent in deportation policy in Germany.

The initiative's statement mentioned that Maurer received this title for allowing the deportation of refugees even from places that are supposed to be safe, such as churches, schools, and hospitals. The statement cited an incident that occurred in December 2024, where immigration authorities in Bremen, with police assistance, attempted to deport a Somali young man from inside a church where he sought protection. The young man had been registered for the first time in Finland, making him subject to deportation there under the Dublin Agreement.

The attempt was met with widespread public protests, as about 100 people intervened to prevent the deportation from taking place. The pastor in charge of the church described it as a "peaceful civil disobedience," while the Ministry of Interior confirmed that some of the protesters were masked and considered what happened a violation of legal agreements. Maurer stated at the time that the procedure was legal, despite the widespread controversy surrounding it.

In contrast, the initiative awarded the "Initiatives Prize for 2025" to the Zion Center of the Evangelical Church in Bremen, in recognition of its provision of protection for refugees under church asylum, despite political pressures. The initiative praised the center's stance in defending human values and human dignity.

The initiative "Jugendliche ohne Grenzen" organizes annual parallel events to the Conference of Interior Ministers in Germany, which was held this year in Bremerhaven, including the selection of a "Minister of Deportation" to highlight policies that violate the rights of refugees.
