Oil prices hit 4-month low; Trump targets India tariffs
Global oil prices have dropped to their lowest level in nearly four months, potentially easing fuel costs in India as tensions in the Middle East show signs of cooling. While the US has issued a waiver to allow the sale of Iranian oil, Indian refiners—the companies that process crude into petrol—are currently holding back on new purchases until market conditions and shipping routes stabilize.
Indian consumers and businesses may face trade uncertainty as US President-elect Donald Trump has renewed his focus on India’s import taxes, or tariffs. Trump claimed that India’s taxes on US goods are as high as 175%, a stance that could lead to new trade negotiations or retaliatory fees on Indian exports to the US, affecting the price of imported electronics, machinery, and luxury goods.
Energy security is expected to improve following a breakthrough in negotiations between the US and Iran in Switzerland. The US has reportedly agreed to unblock $12 billion in frozen Iranian funds to ensure the continued flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow sea passage through which much of India's oil supply is shipped. This diplomatic progress has already contributed to the recent dip in global Brent crude prices.
