Taiwan's Parliament Passes 2026 National Budget After Long Delay
Taiwan's parliament has finally officially passed the national budget for 2026. This decision was reached after a fairly long debate process, marking the longest delay in the approval of a budget in the country's history.
In the plenary session, the parliament, which is currently dominated by the opposition, decided to implement budget cuts. A total of 48 billion New Taiwan Dollars (NT$) was reduced from the total expenditure originally proposed by the government.
Previously, the Taiwanese government had submitted a budget proposal of 3.034 trillion NT$ to support various national programs. However, after a tough negotiation process between factions in parliament, that figure was eventually adjusted downward.
This decision has drawn attention because the approval process took much longer than in previous years. Differences in views between the government and the opposition were the main factors that hindered the smooth progress of this budget legislation.
With the passing of this budget, the Taiwanese government can now begin executing the development plans and work programs that have been scheduled for 2026. Despite the budget cuts, the authorities stated that the country's main priorities will still proceed according to schedule.
