Ministry of Health Enhances Mental Health Services at Community Health Centers
The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia is now paying serious attention to mental health issues in the community. This step was taken following data indicating that one in ten people in Indonesia experiences mental health problems. The government is striving to ensure that access to mental health services can be reached by all levels of society.
Currently, 64 percent of community health centers (Puskesmas) across Indonesia have provided mental health screening facilities. This is an important initial step so that the public can receive early detection and appropriate treatment. Community health centers are expected to be the frontline in providing psychological support for residents at the sub-district level.
In addition to providing screening facilities, the government also continues to increase the capacity of health workers at community health centers. Doctors and nurses are trained to recognize the early symptoms of mental disorders so that patients can receive help more quickly. This effort aims to reduce the negative stigma that often prevents someone from seeking professional help.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Health targets that all community health centers in Indonesia will be able to provide comprehensive mental health services. With these services in place, it is hoped that the quality of life of the Indonesian people can improve significantly. The government also encourages the public not to hesitate to have their mental health checked at the nearest health facility if they feel they need help.
