More Than 1.5 Million Muslims Begin 2026 Hajj Pilgrimage Amid Regional Tensions
More than 1.5 million Muslims from around the world have arrived in Saudi Arabia to begin the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage. This annual pilgrimage is one of the most important religious obligations for Muslims who are able. However, this year's Hajj is taking place under the shadow of concerns regarding political conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran in the Middle East region.
Saudi Arabian authorities have made various major preparations to welcome the millions of pilgrims who continue to arrive. Security is the local government's top priority to ensure the smooth running of the entire series of rituals. Despite political tensions beyond the borders, the atmosphere in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina currently remains focused on religious activities and collective prayers.
Indonesia, as the country with the largest number of Hajj pilgrims in the world, is paying special attention to this situation. The Indonesian government continues to monitor political developments in the region to guarantee the safety of its citizens. Mitigation measures have been prepared by the relevant ministries to face various possibilities that may occur during the Hajj operational period.
Some of the mitigation steps taken by the Indonesian government include intensive coordination with Saudi Arabian authorities and providing safety information to the pilgrims. Hajj officers on the ground have also been asked to be more vigilant and prompt in assisting pilgrims in case of an emergency. This is done so that pilgrims can perform the pillars of Hajj calmly and solemnly without fear.
Although the regional situation is uncertain, the spirit of the pilgrims to perform the Hajj has not diminished. Many pilgrims stated that they remain focused on their spiritual goals and pray for peace to be realized soon in the Middle East. This year's Hajj is expected to run safely and become a symbol of Muslim unity amidst global challenges.
