BMKG Asserts Prediction of Major Earthquake in Indonesia Before 2026 Is Unscientific

Recently, information has been circulating on social media regarding a prediction of a catastrophic earthquake in Indonesia, including in the Jakarta area, before the end of 2026. This information has caused concern among the public as it mentions the potential for massive damage in various regions.

In response to this, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an official clarification. The BMKG asserts that the information regarding the specific timing of such a major earthquake has no accountable scientific basis.

BMKG explains that, to date, technology in the world is not yet capable of accurately predicting the time, location, and magnitude of an earthquake. Therefore, the public is urged not to easily believe rumors circulating on the internet regarding disaster forecasts that do not originate from official government institutions.

As a country located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia does indeed have a high risk of seismic activity. The BMKG continuously monitors tectonic activity throughout all regions of Indonesia 24 hours a day to provide accurate information to the public.

The public is advised to remain calm and always monitor official information through BMKG's official communication channels, such as their website or the InfoBMKG application. The public's main focus should be directed toward disaster mitigation efforts, such as understanding evacuation procedures and ensuring homes are earthquake-resistant, rather than believing in predictions that are not scientifically proven.
