Indonesia Develops 'Sovereign AI' to Strengthen National Technological Independence
The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Communication and Digital, continues its efforts to build technological independence within the country. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, stated that Indonesia is currently preparing for the development of 'Sovereign AI.'
This step is being taken to ensure that Indonesia does not merely become a consumer of global technology, but is also capable of building its own AI infrastructure and models. This development includes the construction of adequate data centers as well as the training of language models that understand Indonesia's local cultural and linguistic contexts.
Nezar Patria explained that AI sovereignty is crucial to ensure that national data remains protected and managed by domestic entities. By possessing independent infrastructure, Indonesia can optimize the use of technology across various sectors, ranging from public services to digital economic development.
In addition to infrastructure, the government is also focusing on developing human resources skilled in the field of artificial intelligence. Collaboration between the government, the private sector, and the education sector is expected to accelerate the creation of an innovative and internationally competitive technological ecosystem.
