Government and UNICEF Collaborate to Realize a Lead-Free Indonesia by 2045

The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs (Kemenko PMK), in collaboration with UNICEF, is currently drafting a National Action Plan (RAN) to achieve the target of a Lead-Free Indonesia by 2045. This step is being taken as a strategic effort to protect public health, particularly that of children, from the dangers of heavy metal exposure.

In a cross-sector meeting held recently, the government emphasized the importance of synergy between various ministries and agencies. The main focus of this discussion was to formulate concrete steps for the 2027 to 2029 period. This plan will serve as a strong initial foundation for reducing the use of and exposure to lead across various industrial sectors and the environment.

Lead exposure is known to have serious health impacts, such as neurodevelopmental disorders in children and chronic health problems in adults. Therefore, the drafting of this action plan is not only aimed at meeting global health standards but also at ensuring a healthier and more productive future for Indonesia's younger generation.

Moving forward, the government will continue to conduct intensive coordination to ensure that every point in the action plan can be implemented effectively. It is hoped that this collaboration between Kemenko PMK and UNICEF can accelerate Indonesia's transition toward a safer environment free from lead pollution over the next two decades.
