BRIN Simplifies Foreign Research Permits with Local Researcher Collaboration Requirement
The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is now implementing new regulations regarding permits for foreign researchers wishing to conduct research activities in Indonesia. This policy aims to ensure that every study conducted within Indonesian territory provides tangible benefits for the development of science in the country.
One of the main requirements in these new rules is the obligation for foreign researchers to involve local researchers in every one of their projects. In addition to collaboration, foreign researchers are also required to perform technology transfers to their Indonesian research partners. This step was taken so that human resources in Indonesia can continue to develop through the exchange of knowledge with international experts.
These provisions refer to Law Number 11 of 2019 concerning the National System of Science and Technology. The government hopes that through this regulation, the quality of research in Indonesia will improve and research results will be more easily accessible and applicable for national interests.
Although it is tightening collaboration requirements, BRIN is committed to simplifying the licensing process for foreign researchers who meet the criteria. A simpler administrative process is expected to attract more high-quality international cooperation without ignoring domestic research interests.
With this policy in place, Indonesia hopes to become a more competitive research hub at the global level. Equal collaboration between foreign and local researchers is expected to create innovations that are beneficial to the wider community and support technological progress in Indonesia.
