Medical Tourism to Malaysia Increases, Indonesians Spend IDR 7.7 Trillion

The trend of Indonesians choosing to seek medical treatment abroad continues to show a significant increase. Recent data shows that the Malaysian medical tourism market from Indonesian patients surged by 24 percent in 2025.

Based on a report from the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council, the total revenue generated by Malaysia from this sector reached RM2.2 billion. When converted into local currency, that figure is equivalent to approximately IDR 7.7 trillion. This amount reflects the high interest of Indonesians in obtaining medical services in the neighboring country.

There are several factors that are often cited as reasons why Indonesian patients choose to seek treatment in Malaysia. In addition to geographical proximity, ease of transportation access, and language similarities, many patients feel that medical costs there are more competitive compared to private healthcare facilities domestically.

This phenomenon presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the healthcare industry in Indonesia. The Indonesian government itself continues to strive to improve the quality of domestic hospital services so that the public no longer needs to go abroad to receive quality medical care.

Moving forward, competition in the medical tourism sector will become increasingly tight. It is hoped that with the improvement of facilities and medical technology in various hospitals in Indonesia, public trust in local healthcare services will continue to strengthen.
