First Mosque in Western Canada Officially Established, a Symbol of Pride for the Indonesian Community
An important historical milestone for Indonesians abroad has just been achieved. The first mosque in the Western Canada region, named Masjid Al-Hikmah, has now officially been established. This inauguration is a very special moment as it coincides with the spirit of welcoming the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.
The mosque is located in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, and serves as a center for religious and social activities for the Indonesian Muslim community living there. The construction of this mosque is the result of the hard work and mutual cooperation (gotong royong) of Indonesian citizens (WNI) who have lived in Canada for many years. They wanted a place of worship that reflects the moderate and friendly Islamic values typical of Indonesia.
In addition to being a place to perform congregational prayers, Masjid Al-Hikmah is also designed to be a cultural center. The mosque management plans to hold various activities, such as Indonesian language classes, introductions to archipelago culinary arts, and national discussions. This aims to ensure that the young Indonesian generation in Canada remains familiar with their cultural roots and national identity, even though they are far from their homeland.
The inauguration of this mosque received a warm welcome from the local government and the surrounding community. The presence of this mosque is expected to strengthen the relationship between the Indonesian community and local residents in Western Canada. Furthermore, this mosque is also tangible proof that the spirit of unity and mutual cooperation among Indonesians remains alive, even in other parts of the world.
The existence of Masjid Al-Hikmah is expected to be a home for all Indonesians to gather and support one another. As Indonesia's independence matures, this achievement serves as a sweet gift demonstrating that the Indonesian diaspora continues to contribute positively to the environment wherever they may be.
