New Regulation: Notaries Moving to Jakarta Now Subject to a IDR 500 Million Fee
The Indonesian government has just issued a new policy that has come as quite a surprise to notaries across the country. Based on the latest regulation, any notary who wishes to move their office or area of practice to Jakarta is now required to pay a fee of IDR 500 million.
This policy was adopted as part of the government's efforts to regulate the distribution of notaries in major cities. So far, many notaries have preferred to open practices in Jakarta because it is considered the most profitable business and economic hub, which has led to an overconcentration of notaries in the capital city.
With this fee in place, the government hopes that notaries will give more consideration to opening practices in other regions that still lack legal professionals. This step is expected to create an equitable distribution of notary services for the public across various regions in Indonesia, rather than having them centered solely in Jakarta.
However, this rule has drawn various responses from legal practitioners. Some parties believe that the cost is quite high and could become a burden for young notaries who are just starting their careers. On the other hand, the government asserts that this policy has undergone in-depth study to ensure a balanced distribution of the profession in the future.
Notaries planning to relocate their area of practice are advised to immediately study the technical regulations regarding this payment. The government will continue to monitor the impact of this policy on the dynamics of the notary profession in Indonesia over the next few months.
