Increase in the Number of Smokers and Vape Users Among Indonesian Youth
Indonesia is currently facing a major public health challenge, particularly among the younger generation. Recent data shows that the number of smokers among children and teenagers continues to increase. This issue has become a serious concern for health experts as it negatively impacts the quality of life for future generations.
According to a report from FAKTA Indonesia, the 15 to 19 age group is now the largest group of smokers in the country. Even more concerning is the emergence of smoking trends among younger children, specifically the 10 to 14 age group. This phenomenon indicates that tobacco products are still very easily accessible to minors.
In addition to conventional cigarettes, the use of electronic cigarettes or vapes is also rising rapidly among teenagers. Many young people are turning to vaping because they consider it safer or are simply following a trend. In reality, vapes still contain nicotine and other chemicals that can damage lung health and lead to addiction from an early age.
Health experts emphasize that children should not be the target market for nicotine products, vapes, or high-sugar foods. Industries often use attractive marketing strategies to reach young consumers. If these habits are not stopped immediately, the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and respiratory disorders during productive age will continue to rise.
To address this issue, strong cooperation is needed between the government, schools, and parents. Stricter supervision of advertisements and the sale of harmful products to children is essential. With better protection, it is hoped that Indonesia's younger generation can grow up healthier and avoid the risk of dangerous diseases in the future.
