The Obesity Problem in Indonesia: A Serious Threat to Public Health

Indonesia is currently facing a significant health challenge regarding weight issues. Based on the latest data, Indonesia is among the top four countries with the highest obesity rates in the world. This condition has become a serious concern for the government due to its extensive impact on public health in general.

Deputy Minister of Health, Dante Saksono Harbuwono, emphasized that obesity is no longer just a matter of appearance or body aesthetics. Obesity is a serious chronic disease that must be addressed immediately. If left unchecked, this condition can trigger various other dangerous, life-threatening diseases.

Data shows that approximately one in four people in Indonesia is overweight or obese. This disease is a major risk factor for the emergence of deadly non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and heart attacks. This certainly places a heavy burden on the national health system.

To address this problem, the government continues to strive to educate the public on the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The public is urged to pay more attention to nutritional intake, reduce the consumption of sugar and fat, and regularly engage in physical activity to avoid the risk of obesity.

Public awareness is the key to reducing obesity rates in Indonesia. By changing to a healthier lifestyle, it is hoped that the prevalence of dangerous diseases caused by obesity can be significantly reduced in the future.
