BRIN Develops Mini Nuclear Reactor to Support Clean Energy
The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is currently developing small-scale nuclear reactor technology, or Small Modular Reactor (SMR). This step is being taken as part of Indonesia's efforts to seek cleaner and more sustainable alternative energy sources for the future.
In its explanation, BRIN revealed that the nuclear reactor currently under development has a power capacity of approximately 50 megawatts (MW). Although this capacity is much smaller than the conventional nuclear reactors typically used in many countries, this technology is designed to be more flexible and efficient.
One of the main advantages of SMR is its compact size, making it easier to build and place in various locations. This technology is expected to be a solution for meeting electricity needs, especially in areas that are difficult to reach by the main power grid or in remote regions of Indonesia.
The development of this reactor is also part of Indonesia's commitment to the energy transition toward carbon neutrality. By utilizing safer and more scalable nuclear technology, the government hopes to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, which have dominated national energy needs until now.
Currently, the project is still being developed by researchers at BRIN. Their main focus is to ensure the safety aspects and operational standards of this technology so that it can be properly implemented in the future in accordance with the regulations applicable in Indonesia.
