Today's News: Student Protests Spread and the Arrest of Roy Suryo

Today, a wave of student protests occurred in Jakarta and Yogyakarta to demand changes in government policy. At the same time, the police arrested two public figures regarding allegations of President Jokowi's fake diploma. Issues of freedom of expression on campus and community initiatives in Aceh also became major highlights.

Hundreds of students from Trisakti University and various other higher education institutions held a demonstration in front of the DPR building in Jakarta to voice "Tritura" or the Three Demands of the People. In Yogyakarta, students from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) stormed an event attended by government officials as a form of protest against the current regime. Amidst these actions, a group called the United BEM Alliance emerged in support of government programs, but their presence sparked controversy and criticism from netizens on social media.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) have arrested Roy Suryo (a former minister) and Doctor Tifa along with six others. They have been named suspects in a case involving the alleged dissemination of information regarding President Joko Widodo's fake diploma. This case drew public attention after allegations concerning the authenticity of the president's educational diploma were widely discussed on digital platforms.

In the educational environment, a number of student journalists from the University of Indonesia (UI) reported experiencing intimidation, stalking, and the leaking of personal data (doxing). This pressure arose after the student press published content regarding LGBTIQ+ issues (gender and sexuality minority groups). Activists are urging the university to guarantee freedom of expression and safety for students.

Meanwhile in Aceh, Gayo residents took self-help action to rebuild the Enang-Enang Bridge, which collapsed due to a disaster. Residents took this independent step because the bridge's collapse had paralyzed transportation and economic access for the local community for some time without any certainty of aid.
