Indonesia Begins Using Bio-aviation Fuel at Jakarta and Bali Airports

The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has announced plans to start using a more environmentally friendly aviation fuel blend. This program will utilize a one percent bio-aviation fuel mixture, known as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This initial trial will be focused on two major airports: Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta and I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali.

The use of this bio-aviation fuel is Indonesia's initial step in reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector. This one percent blend is the first stage before the government increases the percentage of biofuel in the future. Bio-aviation fuel itself is made from natural materials, such as palm oil, processed to be safely used by modern aircraft engines without the need for engine modifications.

The selection of Jakarta and Bali as the initial locations is highly strategic because these two airports have the highest flight volumes in Indonesia. By starting in these locations, the government hopes to see a direct positive impact on the environment. Furthermore, this move demonstrates Indonesia's commitment to following international standards for a greener and cleaner aviation industry.

This program is expected to drive the Indonesian aviation industry toward becoming more sustainable in the future. Although the current blend is still relatively small, the government plans to continue developing the technology and supporting infrastructure. In the future, the use of environmentally friendly fuel is expected to become a new standard for all airlines operating within Indonesian territory.
