Health Threat: Rising Cigarette and Vape Use Among Indonesian Youth
Public health issues in Indonesia are currently facing a major challenge regarding smoking habits at an early age. Recent data shows that the number of smokers among children and adolescents continues to increase significantly. The FAKTA Indonesia organization warns that the youth age group has now become the primary market target for nicotine products, including conventional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes or vapes.
According to collected data, the 15 to 19 age group is currently the largest group of smokers in Indonesia. Even more concerning is that very young children, aged 10 to 14, hold the second position. These figures prove that smoking habits have begun since children are in elementary and junior high school.
In addition to traditional cigarettes, the trend of using electronic cigarettes or vapes has also experienced a rapid increase among students. Many teenagers are interested in trying vapes because they consider them more modern and safer than regular cigarettes. In fact, health experts emphasize that vapes still contain harmful substances that can damage the lungs and interfere with brain development during the growth period.
Health activists emphasize that children should not be the market target for nicotine products or high-sugar products. Attractive advertisements on social media and affordable product prices make it very easy for teenagers to access these items. This condition triggers long-term concerns regarding the health quality of Indonesia's future generations.
The government and the community are expected to work more closely together to protect children from the dangers of substance dependence. More in-depth education in school environments and stricter regulations regarding cigarette sales around educational areas are urgently needed. These steps are essential to ensure that Indonesian children can grow up healthy without the negative influence of the nicotine industry.
