Dental Caries in Children: A Health Challenge Parents Need to Be Aware Of

Dental caries, or cavities, have now become a serious health issue for children in Indonesia. This condition occurs when the enamel, or the outer layer of the tooth, suffers damage due to a demineralization process, which is the loss of essential minerals from the tooth tissue.

According to an explanation from Drg. Alana, dental caries should not be taken lightly as they can affect a child's overall health. If not treated immediately, tooth damage can lead to severe pain, difficulty eating, and even complications in the growth of permanent teeth in the future.

The main cause of dental caries in children is usually closely related to a diet high in sugar and a lack of oral hygiene habits. Food residue that sticks to the teeth, if not cleaned properly, will trigger the growth of bacteria that slowly damage the tooth enamel.

To prevent this, experts advise parents to be more active in guiding their children to brush their teeth regularly twice a day, especially before bedtime. In addition, limiting the consumption of sugary foods and scheduling routine dental check-ups every six months are highly recommended.

Parental awareness regarding the importance of dental health from an early age is the key to reducing the rate of caries in children. With the right preventive steps and discipline, it is hoped that Indonesian children can have better dental health and grow up healthier.
