Beware of the 'Wangiri' Fraud Scheme: Do Not Call Back Unknown Numbers
The Indonesian public is urged to be more cautious regarding a new fraud scheme known as 'wangiri'. This scam is typically carried out by giving a short call or 'miscall' from an unknown foreign phone number.
This modus operandi works by the perpetrator calling the victim's number, but the call is immediately disconnected after ringing once. The goal is to make the victim curious and prompt them to call the number back.
If the victim calls back, they risk suffering significant financial loss. Returning a call to such foreign numbers often connects to premium phone services that will automatically drain the victim's phone credit or incur high charges on their phone bill.
Therefore, the public is advised not to respond to calls from suspicious numbers or unknown international numbers. If you receive a short call from a number that is not in your contact list, it is best to simply ignore the call.
Stay vigilant in protecting your personal data and phone credit. Always double-check the number contacting you before deciding to call back to avoid unwanted losses.
