Independent Review Recommended for Children’s Spinal Care Services

A formal recommendation has been made to launch a commission of investigation into spinal and orthopaedic care services provided by Children’s Health Ireland (CHI). This decision follows a long period of concern regarding the quality and safety of care for young patients waiting for complex surgeries.

Currently, an independent review is being led by UK orthopaedic consultant Selvadurai Nayagam. This review was originally commissioned in September 2023 after serious issues were raised by families and medical professionals. The investigation aims to examine the clinical outcomes and the management of waiting lists for children requiring spinal procedures.

Despite the ongoing review, many parents of affected children have expressed their disappointment. They had been calling for a full public inquiry, which would have provided more transparency and legal powers to examine the systemic failures within the health service. However, the government has so far stopped short of granting a public inquiry, opting instead for this independent review process.

The findings from Mr. Nayagam’s review are expected to provide a clearer picture of the challenges facing the orthopaedic department. Health officials have stated that the priority remains the safety and well-being of the children currently waiting for treatment.

As the review continues, the government faces ongoing pressure to ensure that families receive the answers they deserve. The outcome of this investigation will be a critical step in determining how to improve spinal care standards for children across Ireland.
