New Electronic Tagging Pilot Scheme for Prisoners to Begin in Ireland

Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan has officially confirmed that a new pilot project for the electronic tagging of prisoners will begin in Ireland before the end of this year. The initiative, which will run for an initial 12-month period, marks a significant change in how the Irish justice system manages certain offenders outside of prison walls.

The State has now finalized the contract for the technology required to monitor individuals. Electronic tagging typically involves a device worn around the ankle that uses GPS or radio frequency technology to track a person’s location. This allows authorities to ensure that individuals are complying with specific conditions, such as staying at home during set hours or avoiding certain areas.

This pilot project is designed to help reduce overcrowding in Irish prisons, which has become a major concern for the Department of Justice in recent years. By allowing some low-risk offenders to serve part of their sentences in the community under supervision, the government hopes to free up space for more serious offenders while still maintaining public safety.

Officials will closely monitor the results of the 12-month trial to determine if the system is effective. If the pilot is successful, the government may consider expanding the use of electronic monitoring as a permanent feature of the Irish penal system. This approach is already used in many other countries to support the rehabilitation of prisoners and manage prison populations more efficiently.
