Dublin Hospital Explores New Technology to Overcome Language Barriers
St. James’s Hospital in Dublin is looking for new ways to help patients who do not speak English fluently. Last year, the hospital had to hire professional interpreters more than 9,000 times. This high number shows how diverse the population in Ireland's capital has become and highlights the challenges hospitals face in providing care to everyone.
In 2023, the hospital recorded exactly 9,382 instances where an interpreter was needed. These services are essential to ensure that doctors and patients can communicate clearly about symptoms, treatments, and medical history. Without clear communication, there is a significant risk of medical errors or patients not fully understanding their own health needs.
Currently, the hospital is searching for technological solutions to make this process faster and more efficient. While human interpreters are very effective, they are not always available immediately in emergency situations. The hospital is exploring digital tools, such as specialized translation apps or video conferencing services, to provide instant support when a patient arrives.
The goal of this project is to make sure every patient receives the same high quality of care, regardless of the language they speak. By using modern technology, St. James’s Hospital hopes to reduce waiting times and improve the overall experience for the many international residents living in Dublin.
