Irish Doctor Calls for Better Road Safety After Life-Changing Accident
Seán Owens, a doctor from Ireland, has shared his emotional story about a life-changing road accident. While he was cycling to visit a patient for a house call, he was hit by a car. The driver did not stop at the scene, leaving Dr. Owens with severe injuries that have changed his life forever.
The injuries from the hit-and-run were very serious. Dr. Owens lost his right ear and had to spend nine months in the hospital recovering. Unfortunately, because of the physical impact of the accident, he can no longer work as a general practitioner (GP). He recently told a government committee that he deeply misses his old life and his career in medicine.
Dr. Owens spoke to the Oireachtas transport committee to highlight what he calls a "road safety crisis" in Ireland. He described the current system for protecting road users as "dysfunctional." During his testimony, he explained that the current laws and safety measures are not doing enough to prevent accidents like the one he experienced.
The doctor’s story comes at a time when many people are concerned about the increasing number of road accidents in the country. Dr. Owens is using his personal experience to call for better infrastructure and stronger enforcement of traffic laws. He believes that major changes are necessary to protect cyclists and pedestrians from harm.
By sharing his story, Dr. Owens hopes to encourage the government to take immediate action. His goal is to make the roads safer for everyone so that other families do not have to suffer similar tragedies. His message to the committee was clear: the system must change to save lives.
