Record number of child welfare referrals reported by Tusla
Tusla, Ireland’s Child and Family Agency, has reported a record number of referrals regarding the safety and welfare of children. According to the latest data, the agency received 106,444 referrals over the past year. This figure highlights a significant increase in the number of concerns raised about children across the country.
Statistics show that approximately one in every 23 children in Ireland was the subject of a safety or welfare concern reported to the agency. These referrals cover a wide range of issues, including reports of neglect, physical or emotional abuse, and concerns about a child's home environment. The high volume of reports places considerable pressure on the agency's resources and staff.
In addition to these referrals, the report confirms that nearly 6,000 children were in the care of the state last year. Being in state care means that the child is looked after by Tusla because they cannot live with their own families for safety or welfare reasons. These children are often placed in foster homes or residential care settings to ensure their wellbeing.
Experts suggest that the rise in referrals may be due to a greater public awareness of child protection issues and improved reporting systems. However, the scale of these numbers remains a major point of discussion for policymakers and social workers. The agency continues to work on managing these cases to ensure that vulnerable children receive the support and protection they need.
