New Government Grant to Help Irish Households Switch to Heat Pumps

The Irish government is set to introduce a new financial incentive to help homeowners move away from fossil fuel heating systems. Minister for the Environment, Eamon Ryan, is expected to seek official approval for a new 'boiler scrappage scheme' designed to encourage the transition to cleaner energy.

Under this proposed plan, homeowners will be eligible for a grant of €2,000 if they choose to remove their old oil or kerosene boilers. This money is specifically intended to cover the costs of scrapping these older, less efficient systems as part of a home renovation project.

This new grant will work alongside existing financial supports already provided by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). By combining these incentives, the government hopes to make the installation of modern heat pumps more affordable for families across the country.

The initiative is part of Ireland’s broader climate action strategy, which aims to reduce carbon emissions from residential buildings. Heat pumps are considered a more sustainable alternative to oil-based heating, as they use electricity to transfer heat from the air or ground into the home.

If the scheme receives cabinet approval, it is expected to launch later this year. Officials hope that the additional funding will encourage more people to upgrade their homes, leading to lower energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint for Irish households.
