New Technology to Prevent Wrong-Way Driving Could Take Over a Decade
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has announced that there is no simple fix to prevent drivers from travelling the wrong way on Irish motorways. Officials are set to explain to the Oireachtas Committee on Transport today that a single, immediate solution for this dangerous problem does not currently exist.
According to the TII, the development and installation of advanced technology to stop these incidents could take between 10 and 15 years. While the issue is a major safety concern, experts suggest that a combination of different systems will be required to effectively monitor and alert drivers who are heading in the wrong direction.
Road safety remains a top priority for the government, and this latest update highlights the complexity of upgrading motorway infrastructure. The committee will discuss what short-term measures can be taken to improve safety while waiting for these long-term technological solutions to be developed.
For now, authorities continue to urge drivers to remain vigilant and pay close attention to road signs and markings. The TII plans to continue researching international best practices to see if any existing systems could be adapted for use on Irish roads sooner than expected.
