An Garda Síochána Pays €800,000 Tax Settlement Over Property Rental Issues
An Garda Síochána has paid a tax settlement of approximately €800,000 to the Revenue Commissioners. This payment follows an internal review which discovered that dozens of State-owned properties were being rented to Garda members at rates significantly below the current market value.
The investigation revealed that around 50 properties, which are owned by the State, were involved in these rental arrangements. Under Irish tax law, when an employee receives a benefit from their employer at a cost lower than the market rate, it is considered a 'benefit-in-kind' and is subject to taxation.
Because the rent paid by the Garda members was too low, the force failed to pay the correct amount of tax on these benefits over a period of time. Revenue identified the discrepancy, leading to the substantial settlement payment to cover the outstanding tax liabilities.
In response to the findings, the Garda organization has taken steps to address the issue and ensure that all future property arrangements comply with national tax regulations. The force is currently reviewing its management of these assets to prevent similar financial errors from occurring again.
This incident highlights the importance of strict financial oversight within public institutions. The €800,000 payment serves as a reminder that all State employees and organizations must follow the same tax rules as private citizens and businesses.
