New AI Technology Could Stop Wrong-Way Drivers on Irish Motorways
Artificial Intelligence (AI) may soon be used to improve road safety across Ireland. Transport authorities are exploring new technologies that can detect cars driving in the wrong direction on motorways. This initiative aims to prevent serious accidents and protect drivers on high-speed roads.
Driving the wrong way on a motorway is extremely dangerous and often leads to fatal collisions. Currently, road operators rely on cameras and reports from other drivers to identify these incidents. However, these methods are not always fast enough to stop a driver before a crash occurs.
By using AI, cameras could automatically recognize when a vehicle enters a motorway slip road from the wrong side. The system would then immediately alert traffic control centers. This would allow authorities to warn other drivers and contact the police much faster than they can today.
While the technology is still being evaluated, experts believe it could be a significant step forward for road safety in Ireland. If successful, these AI systems could be installed at key locations on the national motorway network to help save lives and reduce the risk of human error.
