HSE Reviews Scans After Radiologist Loses Medical Licence Abroad
The Health Service Executive (HSE) in Ireland has launched a review of medical scans performed by a radiologist who previously had his medical licence revoked in two other countries. The doctor, identified as Dr. Sattar Kadhem, had his ability to practice medicine cancelled by regulators in Sweden in June 2023, followed by a similar decision in Norway shortly after.
Health officials are now working to identify all patients in Ireland whose diagnostic scans were reviewed by Dr. Kadhem. The HSE stated that this is a precautionary measure to ensure that all clinical decisions made based on his reports were accurate and safe for the patients involved.
This situation has raised questions about how international medical professionals are vetted before they begin working within the Irish healthcare system. The HSE has confirmed that they are cooperating fully with the relevant authorities to investigate how this doctor was able to secure a position despite the previous disciplinary actions taken against him in Europe.
Patients who are affected by this review will be contacted directly by the HSE in the coming weeks. The health service has also set up a dedicated helpline to provide support and answer any questions that concerned individuals or their families may have regarding their medical records.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on patient safety and the integrity of diagnostic services. The HSE has promised to provide further updates as they complete their audit of the scans and determine if any follow-up medical appointments are necessary for the patients involved.
