Young Turkish woman who advocated for Israel granted refugee status
The Advisory Committee on Refugee Affairs in Israel reached a significant decision this week regarding Turku Avci, a young woman from Turkey living in Israel. The committee approved her asylum request, a step that grants her official protection and the security to continue living in the country.
Avci is known to many on social media, where she actively advocates for Israel. Recently, she has spoken out clearly against the positions of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding Israel. Due to this activity, she expressed grave concern for her life and safety should she be forced to return to her homeland.
The decision to grant her asylum comes against the backdrop of growing tensions between Israel and Turkey and President Erdoğan's harsh statements against Israel. Avci's case highlights the complexities faced by foreign nationals in Israel who choose to publicly express support for the country in the face of international criticism.
Now, following the committee's approval, Avci will be able to continue her life in Israel without the immediate fear of deportation. Sources involved in the matter noted that this is an important humanitarian step for someone who risked herself to support Israel in the public arena.
