New study reveals: Significant challenges among the LGBTQ+ community in their senior years in Israel
A new study recently conducted in Israel examines the situation of LGBTQ+ community members aged 50 to 89. The study, which included 320 participants, presents a complex picture of the lives of older individuals in the community and the unique difficulties they face in their daily lives.
According to the study's findings, many participants report severe feelings of loneliness and depression. These data indicate a growing need to provide social and emotional support for this population, a large portion of which feels isolated from broader society or their immediate family.
In addition to the emotional aspects, the study points to significant barriers when interacting with the healthcare system in Israel. More than a quarter of the participants noted that they choose not to disclose their sexual or gender identity to medical staff. The fear of a lack of understanding or inappropriate treatment sometimes prevents them from receiving the optimal care they need.
The researchers emphasize that the findings serve as a red flag regarding the treatment of the older LGBTQ+ population. They call for improved awareness among health and welfare institutions to ensure that every person can feel safe and protected, regardless of their identity, even in their senior years.
