Public Transport Revolution: Local Authorities to Receive New Management Powers
The Knesset Economic Affairs Committee approved today (Monday) a significant step toward improving public transportation in Israel. The committee approved for its second and third readings the bill to establish metropolitan transport authorities. This is an important structural change in the way the state manages traffic and transportation in and around major cities.
According to the new law, a significant portion of the powers currently held by the Ministry of Transport will be transferred to the metropolitan authorities. Until now, the government was the one making most decisions regarding bus routes, station locations, and schedules. Now, local bodies will be able to make decisions that better suit the daily needs of residents in their area.
The goal of the move is to make transportation management more efficient and flexible. Experts in the field believe that local management will allow for better planning of the connection between various modes of transport, such as buses, the light rail, and Israel Railways. In this way, it will be possible to shorten waiting times and improve service for passengers who currently suffer from heavy congestion.
The law is expected to receive final approval in the Knesset plenum soon. For the Israeli public, this represents hope for a real change in road conditions. If the new authorities operate correctly, we may see fewer traffic jams in the future and more citizens choosing to leave their private cars at home and use public transportation.
