Increase in the number of mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus in Israel
The Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Health are reporting concerning findings across the country. During routine tests conducted recently, mosquitoes were captured in various areas in the center and north of the country, which were found in laboratories to be carrying the West Nile virus.
West Nile fever is a viral disease transmitted to humans through the bite of a mosquito that has itself become infected with the virus. Typically, mosquitoes become infected after coming into contact with infected birds. The disease can cause flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headaches, and general weakness, and in some cases, it can lead to more significant medical complications.
Following the discovery of the infected mosquitoes, local authorities have begun increased extermination efforts in the areas where the mosquitoes were located. The goal of these operations is to reduce the mosquito population and prevent the spread of the virus among the general public.
The Ministry of Health recommends that residents take precautionary measures to reduce the risk of bites. It is recommended to use mosquito repellent products, install screens on house windows, and drain standing water sources in yards and residential surroundings, as these serve as ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
The public is asked to continue following the Ministry of Health's guidelines and to stay updated through official announcements. If symptoms arise that raise suspicion of the disease, one should contact their family doctor as soon as possible for medical advice.
