Heatwave in Israel: Surplus tomatoes donated to families in need
The severe heatwave that has recently hit Israel has significantly impacted local agriculture. Due to the high temperatures, tomato crops ripened much faster than expected, leading to a very large quantity of agricultural produce in the markets.
Aid organizations in Israel report that they have received approximately 760 tons of tomatoes over the past month. This represents an increase of about 200% compared to the same period last year, amounting to an additional 500 tons of fresh vegetables.
The large quantity of tomatoes was quickly distributed to families in need across the country. In total, half a million people in need of food assistance benefited from the agricultural produce, thereby preventing a significant amount of food waste.
This initiative highlights the importance of cooperation between farmers and charitable organizations during times of extreme weather changes. Thanks to this effort, farmers were able to pass the surplus on to the general public instead of discarding it, thereby helping vulnerable populations in Israel.
