The Challenge of the Israeli High-Tech Industry: The Competition for Engineers
Prof. Yuval Steinitz, Chairman of Rafael and former Minister of Finance, warns of a concerning trend in the Israeli labor market. In an interview for the "Market Forces" podcast, he addressed the difficulty Israeli companies face in dealing with the growing competition for high-quality personnel in the technology sector.
According to Steinitz, Israeli technology companies are forced to deal with exceptionally high employment costs, sometimes even higher than those of their counterparts in the United States. This situation makes it difficult for local firms to retain the best engineers and experts within their ranks.
The central challenge stems from competition against international technology giants, such as Nvidia, and large defense companies. These firms offer very high salary packages, which causes a "brain drain" from small and medium-sized Israeli companies toward global corporations.
Prof. Steinitz emphasizes that this is a strategic problem for the Israeli economy. If the most talented engineers leave local companies, it could harm technological innovation and Israel's ability to compete in the global market in the long term.
The issue is sparking a broad debate among economists and senior industry figures, who are seeking solutions to retain high-quality personnel in Israel. The central question that remains open is how Israeli companies will be able to continue to grow and develop under such competitive market conditions.
