Concern in the Sea of Galilee: Child hospitalized in serious condition after contracting rare amoeba
The Ministry of Health has issued urgent guidelines to the public in recent days, following a rare and concerning medical case that occurred at the Sea of Galilee. A nine-year-old boy was hospitalized in serious condition, sedated and on a ventilator, after contracting a dangerous amoeba known as "Naegleria fowleri."
The amoeba, sometimes referred to as the "brain-eating amoeba," is a single-celled organism that lives in warm freshwater sources. According to reports, the child contracted the amoeba after swimming in the waters of the Sea of Galilee. This is a very rare case in Israel, but due to the severity of the situation, the authorities decided to act quickly to raise awareness among bathers.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Health is conducting an epidemiological investigation to understand the circumstances of the infection. At the same time, the ministry has published recommendations for the general public. Among the guidelines, bathers in freshwater sources are asked to avoid getting water into their noses as much as possible, as this is the primary way the amoeba enters the body.
Doctors at the hospital continue to fight for the child's life and explain that this is a very severe and dangerous disease. Experts emphasize that despite the concern, there is no need to panic, but safety instructions should be followed when swimming in natural water sources.
The Ministry of Health will continue to monitor the situation and update the public as developments occur. In the meantime, the public is asked to remain vigilant and pay attention to any changes in health status after swimming in water sources, and to seek medical attention if necessary.
