Shin Bet warning: Iran is attempting to recruit Israelis via WhatsApp messages
The Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) has issued an urgent warning to the Israeli public regarding attempts by Iranian intelligence operatives to contact citizens through social media. According to reports, Iranian agents are using the WhatsApp application to reach out to Israelis and offer them various jobs or request that they perform tasks in exchange for monetary payment.
The method used by the Iranian operatives involves impersonating real people or legitimate business companies. They contact citizens with friendly messages and attempt to build a personal connection. Once a connection is established, they ask them to carry out various actions, such as photographing sensitive locations, gathering information on individuals, or placing objects in public areas.
The Shin Bet emphasizes that this is a dangerous cyber trap. The goal of Iranian intelligence is to collect intelligence on Israel or to carry out acts of sabotage using Israeli citizens who do not always realize they are working for a hostile entity. In many cases, citizens think they are performing a normal job, but in reality, they are endangering the security of the state and themselves.
Israeli authorities are calling on the public to exercise high vigilance. If you receive a message from someone you do not know, especially if they are offering money for unclear tasks, it is recommended not to reply to the message, to block the number, and to report it to the police or security forces.
