Public Warning: Mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus detected in Israel

The Ministry of Environmental Protection issued an urgent notice to the public today (Friday), after mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus were found in several locations across the country. The infected mosquitoes were captured during routine monitoring activities conducted by the Ministry in various areas in the north and center of the country.

According to the report, the locations where the mosquitoes were found are the city of Yokneam and the Megiddo Regional Council in the north, as well as in other areas in the center of the country. The Ministry of Environmental Protection has instructed the relevant local authorities to increase monitoring and extermination activities in these areas to prevent the spread of the virus.

West Nile fever is a viral disease transmitted to humans through the bite of mosquitoes infected with the virus. In most cases, the disease causes mild, flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headaches, and weakness. However, in older individuals or those with weakened immune systems, the disease can lead to more significant medical complications.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection urges residents in these areas and throughout the country to take precautionary measures to reduce the risk of bites. It is recommended to use mosquito repellent products, install screens on windows, and drain standing water sources in yards and residential surroundings, as these serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

If you experience symptoms that raise suspicion of the disease, it is recommended to seek medical advice as soon as possible. The authorities continue to monitor the situation on the ground and will update the public as necessary.
