New Study: Increase in Dental Treatments for Children Following the Cessation of Water Fluoridation
A new Israeli study is raising concerns among dental health experts. According to the findings, since water fluoridation was discontinued in Israel, there has been a significant increase in the number of treatments required for dental caries (cavities), especially among children.
The researchers examined the dental health status of children in various communities across the country. The results showed that children from lower socio-economic backgrounds were the most severely affected by the change. The absence of fluoride in drinking water led to the weakening of tooth enamel and the more rapid development of tooth decay.
Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens teeth and helps prevent cavities. In the past, adding fluoride to water was a national policy intended to protect public health, but several years ago, it was decided to discontinue the process. Now, following the alarming data, the researchers are calling on decision-makers to reconsider the issue and reinstate water fluoridation.
The Ministry of Health and professional bodies are currently reviewing the findings. In the meantime, dentists are emphasizing the importance of thorough tooth brushing twice a day and periodic visits to the dentist, especially for parents of young children, in order to minimize long-term damage.
