Synthetic grass and server farms: The new environmental challenges in Israel
In recent weeks, two major environmental issues have risen to the top of the public agenda in Israel: the widespread use of synthetic grass and the increasing load on the national power grid. Experts warn that the decisions we make regarding these issues have a direct impact on our quality of life and the environment in which we live.
Environmental organizations point out that the installation of synthetic grass in yards and playgrounds causes health and environmental damage. According to reports, synthetic grass heats up significantly under the Israeli sun, releases tiny microplastic particles into the air, and contains chemicals that may be hazardous to public health.
At the same time, the technology sector poses a different challenge to the power grid. The Electricity Authority recently announced a freeze on connecting new server farms to the national grid. The decision was made following the massive electricity demand of these farms, which threatens the stability of power supply for all citizens and businesses in the country.
Both of these issues highlight the tension between technological development and personal convenience versus the preservation of natural resources and health. While the demand for quick solutions is growing, authorities and the public are now required to re-examine the long-term effects of our choices on the future of the environment in Israel.
