Mansour Abbas clarifies his position regarding the character of the State of Israel
The chairman of the Ra'am party, Member of Knesset Mansour Abbas, published a detailed post in Arabic this morning (Wednesday) in which he presents his positions regarding fundamental issues in the State of Israel. His remarks come following widespread public criticism directed at him after the answers he gave in a television interview on the program "Meet the Press."
In the post he published, Abbas addressed the question of whether Israel is a Jewish state. He explained that recognizing this reality was a necessary step for his party, so that they could run in the Knesset elections and not be disqualified by the Central Elections Committee. According to him, this was a practical political decision intended to allow Ra'am to operate within the Israeli parliamentary system.
In addition, Abbas addressed the issue of the Nakba in the post. He clarified that he does not deny the events of the past and the Palestinian narrative on this subject. These remarks were intended to clarify his personal and political position to the Arab public in Israel, after a heated debate arose regarding his previous statements on the matter.
Abbas's clarifications are generating significant interest in the Israeli political system, as the Ra'am party constitutes a significant factor in both the coalition and the opposition. The public debate surrounding his words highlights the complexity of how Arab parties operate within the state, and the attempt to balance ideological principles with active participation in the institutions of government.
