Changes in the Likud Party: Netanyahu to select some of the party's Knesset representatives
The Likud party has announced a significant change in the way its representatives will be chosen for the next Knesset. According to the new decision, party members have authorized the party chairman, Benjamin Netanyahu, to personally select one-third of the candidates to be placed on the Likud list.
Until now, most candidates for the Knesset were chosen through a primary election system, in which all party members vote for their preferred candidates. The new system changes this tradition and grants Netanyahu broader authority to determine who will be the people representing the party in the legislature.
The decision has sparked a broad public debate within the Israeli political system. Supporters of the move argue that it will allow Netanyahu to assemble a more balanced and professional list, while critics of the move fear that it is a step that weakens internal democracy within the party.
The change is expected to directly affect the composition of the list in the next elections. Incumbent Knesset members and new candidates will now have to contend with the new reality, in which some of the spots on the list are no longer dependent on the vote of registered members, but rather on a personal decision by the party leader.
As of now, the party is preparing to implement the move ahead of the upcoming election cycles. The Israeli public will closely monitor the impact of the decision on the character of the party and its future political conduct.
