The challenges faced by Arab doctors who studied abroad in their attempt to integrate into the Israeli healthcare system
In recent years, there has been growing interest regarding the integration of Arab doctors who studied at higher education institutions outside of Israel into the local healthcare system. New data indicates that a significant number of students are choosing to complete their medical studies in neighboring countries, including Jordan and institutions in Judea and Samaria, with the hope of obtaining a license to practice medicine in Israel.
According to the latest data, 53 students who studied in Jordan and 59 students who studied at institutions in Judea and Samaria managed to pass the required processes and received an Israeli medical license. However, the process is not simple for everyone, and many students encounter bureaucratic and professional difficulties on their path to full integration into hospitals and community clinics.
Previous studies on the subject have shown that a significant percentage of Arab doctors choose to study abroad due to more accessible admission requirements or a shortage of available spots in medical faculties at Israeli universities. This choice sometimes places them before additional challenges, such as the need to pass complex certification exams to align their credentials with the Israeli standard.
This issue occupies the healthcare system, which is in need of high-quality and skilled medical personnel. Experts in the field note that understanding the needs of these students and easing the licensing processes could help solve the shortage of doctors in the periphery and the center alike, while providing equal opportunity for all graduates to integrate into the Israeli labor market.
