Ministry of Health to destroy approximately 400,000 flu vaccines due to lack of demand
The Ministry of Health recently announced that approximately 400,000 doses of the flu vaccine are expected to be destroyed. These are vaccines that were purchased by the state at an estimated cost of about $2 million, but remained unused at the health maintenance organizations (HMOs).
The main reason for the decision is a lack of demand from the public. The vaccines arrived at the HMOs at the end of December, a period when the flu morbidity wave had already peaked. Due to the late timing, many citizens preferred not to get vaccinated, which led to the accumulation of a large stock that has expired or is no longer needed.
The healthcare system sometimes faces challenges in planning vaccine procurement, as they must be ordered many months in advance. This year, the delay in the arrival of the doses created a gap between the supply of vaccines and the public's actual willingness to get vaccinated.
Now, the ministry is preparing to destroy the remaining doses, an action that will result in a significant financial loss to the state treasury. The case is sparking a public discussion on ways to streamline the process of vaccine procurement and distribution in future seasons, in order to prevent the waste of valuable resources.
